==History==
This event started May 28, 2008, when it was first announced at the AC forum<ref>[http://assault.cubers.net/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=764 "1st AC Mapping Competition"], AC forum on May 28, 2008</ref>. It was based on the idea that mappers would get more competitive to produce high quality maps. The ''1st Assaultcube Mapping Competition'' consisted of following competition rules:

* Must be a desert themed map
* Must be compatible with [[CTF]]
* Must have team and free for all spawn points, pickups, and flag entities
* Must have not been released to the public previously
* Judges may not enter a map themselves.

The first entry of the contest was on June 5, 2008, by ''[[User:Undead|Undead]]''; he promoted his map '''ac_dune'''<ref>[http://assault.cubers.net/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=764&Focus=13712#Comment_13712 Undead promotes ac_dune], AC forum on June 5, 2008</ref>as a medium sized map using a custom skybox. After June, 21st the addition of entries has been closed and the four judges ''[[User:MeatROme|MeatROme]]'', ''[[User:Halo|Halo]]'', ''[[User:RandumKiwi|RandumKiwi]]'' and ''[[User:Archangel|Archangel]]'' have started to rate the maps. Following categories have to be put into consideration: the layout, the use of textures, the use of lights, the level of details and how good the given theme has been catched. Each category has to be rated with 1 to 10 points. After that the average value has been calculated. The final score of a map is then the addition of the average values given by all judges for the that map.

On July 5, 2008, the final scores have been presented<ref>[http://assault.cubers.net/forum/comments.php?DiscussionID=764&Focus=15143#Comment_15143 RandumKiwi presents the final scores], AC forum on July 5, 2008</ref>. With that, ''[[ac_sunset]]'' has become the winning map. As a price it has become also one of the featuring maps of the upcoming AssaultCube 1.0 release package.
